“Time and time again history has shown us that there is nothing - nothing - more powerful than ordinary citizens coming together for a just cause.”
— Michelle Obama
Effectiveness of Council
We've been at it for a few months now, and I have to say I love my council team! The atmosphere is positive, the conversations are productive and the leadership we have from our Mayor, Peter Muttart is top notch!
As we get to know each other and the issues we are passionate about it's encouraging to see that we share many of the same goals: rural internet connectivity, developing renewable energy, and making Kings County the premier place to live in Nova Scotia, maybe even Canada!
Promote Sustainable Development
To borrow directly from Peter Muttart
"Kings County is blessed with large, fertile agricultural districts, we need to encourage and celebrate the growth of our agricultural economy. One way of doing that is to be very careful to choose where development should, and should not happen."
Our new municipal complex has been a hot topic since the election, and there is a lot of work to be done. We need help from the public to know what they would like their multi-million dollar building to be! Join the conversation and stay up to date about the process through the County of Kings
website and my personal blog.
Protecting Agricultural Land
If there's one thing that I learned from my studies in Environmental Management it's that agricultural land is easy to destroy, and hard to recover. With poor land use planning strategies and lack of community involvement, dozens of villages and hamlets have the potential to be swallowed up forever leaving nothing but suburban developments where beautiful farmland once existed.
I don't want to see that happen in Kings County. With fresh leadership and proper teamwork, council will to be able to finalize the municipal planning strategy (MPS) and the Kings 2050 initiative which will support future economic growth while protecting invaluable agricultural land.
I understand the importance of feeding people and making a living. I also have a keen grasp on the astronomical costs of operating large farms and that many people in my generation will simply never be able to afford to cultivate a living that way. By protecting farmland now we allow young people to seek self-employment and create a "Young People's Economy" that would benefit the entire county (and planet!)
By setting reasonable, achievable long-term goals at council we will encourage farmers both young and old, large and small, to think outside the box and develop new agricultural systems which will work for everyone.
Consulting the Public
Big changes are coming to how we engage with the citizens of Kings County! Our new engagement tool, PlaceSpeak, is a great way to single in on the projects and issues that are happening in your area, and the county as a whole. Sign up today and stay informed about public information sessions, proposed developments and local events.
Hopefully, my blog can be a helpful place to find information too, so scoot on over there and see what's happening!
